Attending the Source Kids Disability Expo in Melbourne: A Provider’s Perspective

As a provider dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with disabilities, Light Disability Services had the incredible opportunity to attend the Source Kids Disability Expo in Melbourne last weekend. This event, a pivotal gathering for the disability community, provided a platform for us to connect with families, carers, and fellow service providers. Here’s a glimpse into our experience and why we believe attending this expo is invaluable for anyone involved in the disability sector.

Highlights of the Expo

The Source Kids Disability Expo is renowned for bringing together a diverse array of exhibitors and visitors, all focused on enhancing the quality of life for people, especially kids, with disabilities. Some of the highlights from this year’s expo included:

  1. Innovative Products and Services: The expo showcased a wide range of innovative products and services designed to support individuals with disabilities. From adaptive technology to accessible recreational activities, there was something to inspire everyone.

  2. Engaging Workshops and Performances: Attendees had access to a variety of workshops and performances led by experts in the field. These workshops included Fighting Crime with Victoria Police, All Abilities Footy, Dance classes, African Drumming for Kids and a Live Show by award winning Team Dream.

  3. Fun, Neurodivergent-Friendly Zones: Aimed at making the expo a great day out for all, the expo had a variety of zones to keep the kids entertained all day. Featuring; an active zone, an arcade zone, an animal zone, a nature zone, a movie zone, a VR zone and a race running zone.

  4. Networking Opportunities: The expo provided an excellent platform for networking with other service providers, community organizations, and families. This not only helped us to build valuable connections but also to stay updated with the latest industry trends and practices.

Light Disability Services at the Expo

This was our first year at the expo and my, oh my, was it a hoot! The booth was managed by none other than our Superstar Operations Manager, Tafara Zvenyika, and our highly excitable Support Worker, Karina Dobra. Both reported to have a lot of fun and most of all, both reported to having deeply insightful and thought-provoking conversations with all providers, people with disabilities, and their carers about how we can all come together to support people with disabilities. Support them in overcoming mental and physical challenges, achieve the access and funding they require from the NDIS and how people with disability can achieve greater inclusion and a life of freedom, independence and choice. Karina reported to have gained a deeper level of empathy and passion for the work she does for Light Disability Services, in providing support and care for people with disabilities and in creating solutions to the current problems her participants face.
